CLOQUET- The first annual Northland Frisbee Tournament is on for Cloquet on Friday June 29th with 14 teams participating. Teams begin with a pool play format with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the championship bracket. Games are played under the light at Pinehurst Park in Cloquet.

“I think this is the only tournament of its kind in state,” Tournament coordinator Luke Heine of Cloquet told Northland Sports Online. “This started with just a bunch of us that played Frisbee and it has been growing ever since.” Heine added “We have teams from all over the area; from Cloquet, to Esko, from Barnum, to Hermantown.”

Heine all was quick to point out that “The tournament is not just younger people and that the teams are individuals who are in high school, college students, and even people whose children are playing in the tournament.

The rules are very simple with two seven person teams playing two halves of 15 minutes each with the team with the highest score being declared the winner. Points are scored much like football where the Frisbee is passed into the end zone where a team mate has to make the catch.

Players may not take more than two steps or it is considered traveling. There are rules about playing hard but no contact; there is striping rules regarding the Frisbee and also rules regarding shoes that each player may wear. The goal while winning is important, sportsmanship and playing in the spirit of the game is the ultimate goal.

The Frisbee tournament organizers will donate all the money raised to the area R.E.A.C.H program in Carlton County. Heine mentioned to NSO “We wanted to donate to a charity that is local and used to benefit kids. A lot of us are young and kids ourselves, so it’s about kids helping kids.”

Tournament results will be posted online on here at Northland Sports Online when they become available. Anyone who is interested in Frisbee as well can contact Heine through their web site at http://www.northlandfrisbee.org
