The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team peaked at the right time last winter and returned to the Minnesota State High School hockey tournament. This summer, the team has committed to getting stronger and working on their skill level. That level of commitment came through, giving the Lady Jacks a championship victory in a summer hockey tournament in Grand Rapids this past weekend.

CEC opened tournament play with a 3-2 over the Edina/Minnetonka Rink Rats. Second round action saw CEC defeat Hibbing 9-1 on Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Jacks into the championship game against Grand Rapids/Greenway.

Tournament games are played in two 26 minute halves and the Jacks found themselves on the short end of a 2-0 score after the first half of play in the title game.

Kalie Shevich pumped home a goal in the second half to cut the lead to 2-1 and then Kelsey Woods tied things up late in the game with a pretty goal before CEC won the game in the second overtime.

The Lumberjacks hope the summer season will parlay itself into another strong year next winter as they try for another trip to the state tournament.
