Cloquet-Esko and Hermantown Compete In Grand Rapids Invite

The Cloquet-Esko Lumberjacks and the Hermantown Hawks boys golf teams both competed in the Grand Slam Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Grand Rapids and in Coleraine on Saturday. The meet win went to the host Grand Rapids Thunderhawks and it was Thunderhawks Alec Odegaard who was the medalist with a 148, two shots better the Brent Musich of International Falls.

Grand Rapids finished with a team total of 612 for the two days which was far ahead of the second nearest competitor in Cambridge-Isanti, who was second with a total of 655. Detroit Lakes was third with 668, Hibbing was fourth with 670, and Duluth East placed fifth with 674. Cloquet-Esko finished eighth with a total of 682, and it was Hermantown finishing in tenth place shooting 711 for the two-day total.

The Thunderhawks led after the first day with a total of 305 at Pokegama Golf Course in Grand Rapids. On Saturday in Coleraine, the Thunderhawks shot 307 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course. Cloquet-Esko was fifth after day on with a team total of 328, but fell back on Saturday after shooting a 354 and dropping them back to eighth place.

The Hawks, who started with 347 on Friday saw themselves falling further back on Saturday as they shot the day’s high 364 to fall back into tenth place overall for the Invitational. Other teams competing in the two day tournament were Virginia, International Falls, Superior, and Greenway.

The Thunderhawks had four players in the top ten for the tournament, while the highest local finisher was Travis Weiss of Hermantown who finished 10th overall, shooting a 161. Nick Neve of Cloquet-Esko was 17th with a score of 167, Marc Peterson placed in the top 25 as well, shooting a 168 to finish 22nd overall.

Cloquet-Esko also had the following finishers, Eric Fryc was 29th with a 173, Zach Strom was 39th with a 176, Dillon Johnson was 43rd with a 178. Hermantown’s Drake Cox shot a 181, Derek O’Brien shot a 183, and Dylan Kohlquist rounded out the Hawks scoring with a 186 on the afternoon.
