Cloquet-Esko Boys Golf Fairs Well In First Meet

The Cloquet-Esko boys golf team opened up there 2012 season and they started with a nice run, finishing a close second in their first meet of the season. Thursday the Lumberjacks traveled to Ashland to play in the eight team meet at Chequamegon Bay Golf Course in Ashland Wisconsin and it was the Lumberjacks, the only Minnesota High School finishing just six strokes behind meet winner Northland Pines.


Northland Pines (Minong) finished with a team total of 354, while the Lumberjacks placed second with a team total of 360. Lakeland finished third with a total of 385, Ashland finished fourth with 390, and Phillips was fifth with a team score of 400. The rest of the teams that competed were Chequamegon with 407, Prentice had 424, and Hurley had 430.


Chequamegon’s Kevin Jean beat Ashland’s Drew Matheus in a sudden death playoff hole to finish as medalist by shooting an 80. Northland Pines had the next top three finishers on Thursday as Sam Lacko finished third shooting an 83, Jacob Stephan finished with an 86 and it was Dan Finke who shot an 87 to round out the top five finishers.


Cloquet-Esko’s Zack Strom was the Lumberjacks top finisher as he shot an 88 to finish in sixth place overall, Marc Peterson was seventh with an 89 for the Lumberjacks. Eric Frye shot 91 for the Lumberjacks, while it was Brett Morrison and Nick Never who both shot a 92 on this cold day off Lake Superior.


The Lumberjacks will be back in action again on Monday when they play in the Hinckley-Finlayson Invitational at Grand National Golf Course in Hinckley. They will also play next Friday and Saturday in the Grand Rapids Invitational at Pokegama Golf Course in Grand Rapids.
