Saints Win Fifth Straight Dual Match

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men’s tennis team returned to dual play action at their home facility at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center on Saturday afternoon. The Saints downed the Cardinals of Saint Marys 7-2 in a match that featured three superbreaker singles matches. CSS would jump out to a 3-0 doubles brace before losing two of three superbreakers in the singles portion of the dual. With this fifth straight victory, the men have now secured their spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs as the #4 seed, where they will host #5 Saint Johns at home on Tuesday the 25th of April. Their regular-season finale and senior day match will feature the Pipers at the Saint’s alternate home facility in Virginia tomorrow afternoon.

Doubles
The Saints claimed all 3 doubles matches at an efficient pace against the Cardinals. At the No.1 doubles position team doubles wins leaders Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius’ College) and Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au.) dropped just 2 games, finishing with an 8-2 scoreline. Freshmen Julius Tabrizi (Frankfurt, Germany/Bischof-Neumann) and Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn.) rolled to an 8-5 victory and the Junior duo of Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) stayed unbeaten as a tandem, completing the doubles sweep 8-4.P

Singles
Saint Scholastica would roll on courts No. 1, 3, and 5 to straight set victories. Abeleda grabbed his ninth singles win 6-2, 6-3 win on court 1 and co-team singles wins leaders Tabrizi and Riley Versich (Kelly Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS (Itasca CC)) grabbed their tenth overall wins and fourth straight individual singles wins in a row on courts #3 and #5. Patten would deliver in the superbreaker on court #6, coming back a set down 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Gerrard-Stace and Anderson both were narrowly defeated in the third sets of their contests on courts #2 and #4, 6-3, 2-6, 8-10 and 7-5, 3-6, 3-10.
