UMD Sweeps Arizona State

No. 5 Minnesota Duluth comes off of Saturday’s game with a 4-1 win to open their season with a sweep against Arizona State. UMD will now have an overall record of 2-0 and leaves ASU with a 0-2 record.

The Bulldogs to notch one goal each, both of which were season firsts, included Luke Mylymok and Owen Gallatin. With back-to-back goals, freshman Ben Steeves recorded his first and second career goals as a Bulldog. Carter Loney tallied two assists, along with Luke Loheit, Tanner Laderoute, Cole Spicer, and Gallatin each notching one assist. Transfer Matthew Thiessen played for 60 minutes, stopped 29 shots, and recorded his first win with UMD.

The first period of play was held scoreless by both teams. Though nobody found the back of the net, both teams had plenty of shots on goal. UMD led in shots in the first period, 13-12. ASU and UMD both killed off one two minute penalty.

Two minutes into the second period, ASU forward Demetrios Koumontzis netted the first goal of the game. Following that up Spicer brought the puck over the blue line and passed to Laderoute where he passed it back to Spicer who was then positioned to the right of the goal bringing the goalie to his side. Spicer then passed the puck across to Mylymok, where he flicked it in the left side of the net that was left wide open. Mylymok’s goal tied the game up 1-1. Later in the second period the Bulldogs went on a power play. Kaiser set up the play for Daschke to bring the puck to the Bulldogs blue line and then passed it back to Steeves on the blue line. Steeves moved the puck up the ice and shot a rocket past ASU’s goalie, taking the lead 2-1 for the Bulldogs. 57 seconds later ASU turned over the puck to Loney. Loney held the puck while Steeves skated up ice and positioned himself on the right side of the goal. After accepting Loney’s pass to the right side, Steeves skated across to the left for an open net and scored another goal for the Bulldogs.

Minnesota Duluth went into the third period with a two goal lead against the Sun Devils. ASU was faced with a charging call, to put the Bulldogs on another power play at 11:05. At 11:29 Loney held the puck on the right side long enough to bring all the ASU players away from the net. Gallatin came in wide open on the left and received the pass from Loney to give the Bulldogs their fourth goal of the game.

Up next Minnesota Duluth will take a weekend off then be in Mankato Oct. 14-15 for a non-conference series against Minnesota State.
