The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team saw its win streak end today, losing 5-1 to the Minnesota State Mavericks in Mankato this afternoon.

Anna Tobias scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs, her second goal in as many games. With her goal, she is now tied with Jackie Jares and Emilia McGiffert for most goals on the team with two apiece.

Tobias’ goal came in the 74th minute. Rachel Boelke played a long left-footed ball behind the defense to Tobias, who chased it down and slotted the ball behind the Mavericks goalkeeper to cut Minnesota State’s lead to four goals.

The Mavericks came out strong in this afternoon’s game and continued its high-scoring ways this season with five goals in today’s game. The first goal came from Nadia Lowry at the 12:52 mark, before the team’s leading scorer, Jenny Vetter, doubled the Mavericks’ lead at 27:07. Minnesota State would add one more before halftime. Vetter scored another goal in the 50th minute to make it 4-0, and Natalie Thoen would make it 5-0 before Tobias would save the Bulldogs from being shut out in the game.

Goalkeeper Sophia Grenz played the first 72 minutes of the game before being subbed out for Jennifer Norris. Grenz and Norris combined for nine saves in the game, with Grenz accounting for six.

The Bulldogs now have three of four games at home to close out the 2021 season. First up is a match up against Wayne State on Friday evening. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM at Malosky Stadium.
