NSO – News Release

Jordan Aultman scored twice and Elijah Aultman once as the CEC Lumberjacks
defeated the top seeded Denfeld Hunters 3-2 Tuesday night at Public School
Stadium in West Duluth.
The Hunters who had defeated the Lumberjacks earlier this season and ended the
Lumberjacks season a year got revenge they had talked about since last year
when Denfeld ended the Lumberjacks perfect season in the section 7A
quarterfinals.
The last two meeting between these two teams saw hard fought tight battles in
which the Hunter’s prevailed 1-0 in both matches. Tuesday night’s section final
was hard fought and very physical like the last two meetings but both team would
score twice in the first half to have a 2-2 tie at the break.
Jordan Aultman would go top shelf on the game’s first goal just a little over three
minutes into the first half. The Hunters responded less than two minutes later
when they would tie the score at 1-1 when August Haugen scored past a diving
Lucas Rauner.
In a match which saw both teams playing up tempo and trying to beat the other
team’s defense, it was the Lumberjacks picking up the third goal of the match as
Elijah Aultman used a header pass to himself as he made it 2-1 just 10 minutes
into the match.
Matt Eklund tied the match at 2-2 at the 19 minute mark of the 1 st half as both
teams fought for that advantage and several chances by both teams, the 1 st half
ended 2-2.
The physical hardnosed play continued into the second half and it was Jordan
Aultman who broke the 2-2 tie with his second goal of the game which led to the
final 3-2 victory.
Several Yellow Cards and a red card were handed out down the stretch as both
teams were victims of the fouls called. With a little over then a minute remaining

a hard collision between Cloquet-Esko-Carlton goal keeper and Simon Davidson of
the Hunters led to a red card ejection on a play away from the collision and a
yellow card handed out to the Hunter bench, hindered what was a close tight
match as the Lumberjacks when on to the victory, making it a sweep for both the
girls and boys soccer teams at PSS.
The Lumberjacks now advance to the state tournament for the second time in the
three schools history. The last appearance came back in 2011. Like the girls state
soccer tournament the quarterfinals dates and locations will be determined after
the state seeding’s come out this weekend.
