Saints Fall to Hamline

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team went five sets with Hamline University, who is tied for first in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), but came up just short as the Pipers prevailed Friday night at the Reif Gymnasium.

How it Happened
The opening set featured eight ties and five lead changes, but the Saints went on a 6-1 run with the score tied at 16-16 to take a 22-17 advantage. After the Pipers (16-5, 6-1 MIAC) got within 24-23 a Delaney Schaeffer (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) kill gave the Saints the first 25-23. Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) led the Saints with four kills in the set.

The second set was also tight, but with the score 19-18 in favor of Hamline, the Pipers went on a 5-1 run to give them set point. After CSS fought off three set points, Hamline got the fourth to even the match 25-22. Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) led the Saints with three kills in the set.

St. Scholastica struggled with serve receive in the third set as Hamline had seven service aces in the set and never trailed winning, 25-15.

The Pipers then built a 14-8 lead in the fourth set, before the Saints recorded eight of the next 10 points to tie the score at 16-16. Now trailing 19-17, CSS went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. A Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) kill gave the Saints set four by a 25-23 score to force a fifth-and-deciding set.

CSS jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth set forcing an early Hamline timeout. However, from that point on it was the Pipers that took control winning 11 of the next 13 points. The Pipers outlasted the Saints to take the final set 15-9.

Top Performers
Larson led the Saints with 11 kills. Schaeffer finished with nine kills. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 28 assists and Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) led the way with 25 digs. Three different Saints recorded at least 20 digs with Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) finishing with 24 digs and Alana Mayry (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) with 20 digs. Rohwer finished with a match-high six blocks.
