Saints Sweep Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – On Saturday, the St. Scholastica softball team traveled to the University of Northwestern (Minn.) for a conference doubleheader at Reynolds Field and came away with a pair of wins to run its winning streak to seven games.

Game 1: CSS 5, UNW 4
The first game was a nail biter as the crowd saw the Saints hold off the Eagles (8-18, 3-3 UMAC) in the last inning to win 5-4.

The Saints started off strong in the first inning with a solo home run by Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS). However, in the bottom of the first the Eagles scored two runs to make it 2-1 going into the second. In the third inning Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) singled for an RBI as Howe scored to tie the game.

Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to take the lead 3-2. The score stayed stagnant until the top of the sixth inning, when Seurer singled to advance Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) to third and Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) home to extend their lead to two. Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) hit the Saints third solo home run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-2 with only three outs left to take the win.

Northwestern made a late attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored two runs to make the score 5-4, but Howe came in to record the final two outs and earn the save.

Rosenthal was awarded the win. Howe went 3-for-5 batting with a double and home run. Seurer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Game 2: CSS 4, UNW 2
The Saints never trailed in game two to sweep the doubleheader from the Eagles.

In the top of the first, Howe singled to left field and an error allowed Anders home to score the first run of the game. Later in the third inning, Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary’s)) earned the RBI with a single to advance Howe home.

In the fourth the Eagles got on the board to make the score 2-1. In the fifth inning Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to earn her second RBI and Erickson scored. Anders scored an unearned run on an error by the shortstop in the sixth to make the score 4-1. In the bottom frame, Northwestern hits a solo home run to make the final 4-2.

Howe was awarded the win to add to her impressive record of 10-1. She scattered 10 hits and recorded two strikeouts. The Saints got on base by balls 11 times. Both Seurer and Stewart had two RBIs on the day.

Up next:
The Saints (19-3, 4-0 UMAC) host Northland College on Tuesday for another Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader. The action is scheduled for begin at 3:30 p.m. at Kenwood Field.
