The Moose Lake -Willow River Boys and Girls golf teams are ready for spring and to get out and hit the course as soon as possible. With the weather finally warming up and snow slowly fading the ML-WR boys and girl’s teams are eager to hit the links.

Steve Mokros, going into his sixth season as head coach for the Rebels told NSO, “Although golf has lost popularity since 2000, we are still experiencing good numbers of athletes going out for golf.” ML-WR has good numbers as they have twenty-two boys and nine girls. Mokros also stated “winning the conference title is the goal for both the girls and the boys.”

The Rebel Boys finished third in the Polar League last season and are looking to improve this season. The Rebels are very young with most of the leadership expected to come from junior Nick Dougherty and freshman Jacob Indihar. The rest of the varsity positions will be filled by sophomores and freshman. The Rebel boys last won the Conference Championship in 2006.

The Lady Rebels will be lead by Senior Jodie Staebler; she will be joined by All-Conference eighth grader Kayla Larson. “Larson had an outstanding season last year” Mokros mentioned. Those two will be joined four sophomores and three eighth graders fighting it out for the final varsity positions.

The Rebels are tentatively scheduled to open the golfing season Tuesday April 16th at the Moose Lake Golf Course in a meet against Two Harbors and Cook County-Silver Bay.
