UMD Tops Wayne State in College Football

The University of Minnesota Duluth battled through the cold, wind, and snow to take down Wayne State College 21-7 for a homecoming victory Saturday afternoon at Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

After a scoreless first quarter, an interception from redshirt freshman safety Tim Pokornowski set the Bulldogs up on the Wayne State 18-yard line. Four plays later, sophomore running back Wade Sullivan snuck through the Wildcat defense for a four-yard touchdown. The Wildcats would knot things back up at seven, three seconds before halftime on a quarterback keeper from the two-yard line.

The Bulldogs wouldn’t find the endzone again until early in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Garrett Olson’s nine-yard fade to the left corner of the endzone found redshirt freshman wide receiver Byron Bynum. The go-ahead score capped off a 12-play, 83-yard drive that lasted 5:40. With just over a seven minutes remaining, senior defensive back Tyrik Carmickle blocked a Wayne State punt to set the Bulldog offense up at the Wildcat 16-yard line. Four plays later, UMD would push their lead to 21-7 when Sullivan converted another turnover into six points with his second four-yard touchdown scamper.

The Bulldog defense returned to form this week, holding the Wildcat offense to only 106 total yards … Pokornowski’s interception was the first of his young Bulldog career … junior defensive lineman Dan Monson (1), senior linebacker Isaac Erdmann (1), redshirt freshmen linebacker Brad Dati (1), junior linebacker Nate Pearson (2.5), junior linebacker Joe Kordus (1), and junior defensive back Barry Moreland (0.5) each contributed to UMD’s seven total sacks on the afternoon.

Olson made his first collegiate start under center for the Bulldogs and completed 8-of-9 attempts for 48 yards and one touchdown… Sullivan’s second-quarter and fourth-quarter scores were his 17th and 18th of his Bulldog career and puts him at five touchdowns on the season … Bynum’s fourth-quarter touchdown was the first of his Bulldog career.

The Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday when they take on the University of Sioux Falls. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
