UMD Women win on Overtime

The No. 9-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey program officially began the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) season at AMSOIL Arena, skating to a 3-2 overtime victory against Minnesota State on Friday afternoon.

Senior Sydney Brodt scored her second goal of the game just 0:26 into overtime as the Bulldogs edged out the Mavericks in the league lid-lifter.

MSU (2-3-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) struck first in the contest, as Claire Butorac slipped a shot through the Bulldog defense at 4:46 of the first, assisted by Mallorie Iozzo and Charlotte Akervik. No. 9 UMD (2-1-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) took control from there, holding the puck in its own offensive zone through much of the first period and out-shooting the Mavericks 16-7 in the first period.

Mankato netminder Abilgail Levy continued to hold the Bulldogs off the board until the closing moments of the second period as senior Sydney Brodt made good on a breakaway for her third of the season to knot the score at a goal apiece with just 0:48.1 remaining in the frame. Assists came from junior Ashton Bell and sophomore Gabbie Hughes on the play.

Emily Antony helped the Mavericks pull ahead in the third with her first of the year at 7:31 of the period, but after a timeout, UMD struck again, this time with Hughes doing the honors herself, pulling the Bulldogs even with 8:16 remaining in regulation. The two teams skated to a draw in regulation despite UMD out-shooting Minnesota State 45-16 through the first 60 minutes.

NOTABLE
Senior goaltender Maddie Rooney made 14 saves between the pipes for UMD … the Bulldogs totalled 46 shots against Levy, but the sophomore made 43 stops to keep her Mavericks.
