Number two-ranked team in the country? No problem.

The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team knocked of No. 2 Colgate University 4-1 Friday in the opening game of the Windjammer Classic hosted by the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont.

The Raiders were the highest ranking squad UMD had faced so far this season, and give the Bulldogs their highest ranked triumph since it trounced the then No. 2 University of Minnesota 5-3 on Jan. 14, 2017.

An even first period between both squads was unsettled late in the second period, when rookie forward Naomi Rogge put the Bulldogs on the board at the 17:37 mark.

A mere 17 seconds later, UMD sophomore forward Sydney Brodt banged home a rebound, and just like that, the Bulldogs had a 2-0 goal advantage and a little over 20 minutes to seal their first major upset of the season.

Seal it the Bulldogs did when freshmen forward Ashton Bell, with help from senior forward Katerina Mrázová’s second assist of the game, pushed UMD’s lead to 3-0 2:58 into the third period.

A hustled effort by Lynn Astrup gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead on a power play goal at 13:52, and also handed the senior forward her first tally of the season.

The Raiders netted a power play goal late in the stanza to get on the board, but it was the Bulldogs who left the ice with the upset and their fifth win in their last six games.

Senior goaltender Jessica Convert had 24 saves in the contest for UMD, which outshot Colgate 32-28 in the game.  Both teams netted one power play goal — UMD  went 1-of-5 and the Raiders 1-of-3 with the extra skater.

Julia Vandyk made 28 saves for Colgate, who suffered just its second loss of the season and falls to 13-2 overall.

The Bulldogs (8-8-0) will play in the championship game of the Windjammer Classic tomorrow night against the winner of the University of Vermont/Rochester Institute of Technology contest that will get underway in Burlington at 6:00 p.m. ET.

The championship game is set for 7:00 p.m. ET tomorrow night.
