Northland Sports Online has learned that the Minnesota State High School League is going to be conducting a study over the next month on cost cutting changes. This possibly will affect wrestling and basketball as well.

An executive committee of the Minnesota State High School League’s board of directors will conduct a feasibility study to explore changing state tournament formats in those sports to see if it helps in keeping costs down for the league and member schools.

Rumors of changes have been circulated over the past year since the High School League went from two classes to three in both boys and girls golf. One idea is moving golf back to two classes. Also changes to the possible or that are being considered is to have the golf season move to the summer months or to the fall.

One of the possible changes would be starting High School golf in mid June and playing through August. The other idea being circulated is having the golf season switching to a fall sport, starting in august and ending in October.

The board will make a formal decision at its June 8th meeting to determine the fate of the sport. The High School League has stated that changes do need to occur in Golf or there is a possibility of losing Golf as a High School sponsored event.

Northland Sports Online will continue to monitor this development and will have more information available as soon as it is known.
