NSO – NEWS RELEASE

The Bulldogs needed less than three minutes with the NCAA’s sixth-best power play to turn a one-goal lead into a three-goal lead Friday night.

After falling behind in the first period for only the third time this season, the No. 4/3 University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team stormed back in the third period to outgun Harvard University 4-1 at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Mass.  With the win, the Bulldogs are now unbeaten in eight of their last nine games and improve to 9-3-3 overall.

A Crimson deflection beat UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney at the 11:19 mark of the first period, and put the Bulldogs in a most unfamiliar place — trailing an opponent after the first 20 minutes of play.  The lone goal of the second period came at 7:04 and belonged to senior forward Ashleigh Bryakliuk, whose blast from the point equalized the game 1-1.

Deadlocked after 40 minutes of action, UMD senior forward Lara Stalder needed just 11 seconds to find linemate Katherine McGovern on the doorstep to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the night.  McGovern doubled down on that with her second goal of the game, a power play tally at 5:30, and less than three minutes later, Michelle Lowenhielm crushed any Crimson upset bid with UMD’s second power play score of the evening.

The Bulldogs outshot Harvard 13-15 in the third period alone, and 36-25 overall.  Rooney made 24 saves for the Bulldogs, who went 2-of-5 on the power play and kept the Crimson scoreless in two attempts.  Harvard goaltender Molly Tissenbaum had saves for the Crimson, who fall to 1-7-0 overall.

UMD will look for win No. 10 of the young season tomorrow afternoon when it wraps up the series at 3:30 p.m. ET.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Lara Stalder had a game-high three assists in the game, her seventh game this season with two or more points … both Katherine McGovern and Ashleigh Brykaliuk each had two points for UMD — McGovern with two goals and Brykaliuk with a goal and an assist … McGovern has had four games with two or more points, while Brykaliuk has had seven … the Bulldogs are now 1-1-1 after trailing a game in the first period … UMD is also 1-1-1 when its opponent scores first (by comparison, UMD is 8-2-2 when it strikes first).
