NSO – NEWS RELEASE

The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team scored two goals in the first period and sophomore goaltender Maddie Rooney did the rest as the Bulldogs kept rolling with a 2-1 win over the No. 9 University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. on Saturday.  UMD, now unbeaten in its last five games, also moves to 7-2-2 overall, and 5-2-1-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

A breakaway from Lara Stalder 7:32 into the first period gave UMD a 1-0 lead.  The senior forward was sprung at the blueline by Ashleigh Brykaliuk, and beat UND goaltender Lexie Shaw around her left skate for her eighth goal of the season.  Just 34 seconds later, the Bulldogs doubled that score after Katerina Mrázová buried a cross-crease puck on the doorstep.  Stalder had pulled the puck wide to Shaw’s right and found Mrazova along on weak side at 8:06 for the 2-0 goal.

Rooney gave UND fits between the pipes, but the Fighting Hawks one and only success came from a Haili Krzyzaniak’s wrist-shot, that beat Rooney through traffic at 10:06 of the third period.  North Dakota outshot UMD 10-7 in the final 20 minutes and 25-21 in the game, but Rooney was unflappable in her seventh win of the season.

The Bulldogs will return to Ralph Engelstad Arena Arena tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. to finish out their  series with North Dakota.
