NSO – NEWS RELEASE

For the second straight night, the University of Minnesota Duluth fell just short in a thrilling game, this time to Lindenwood University.

Sophomore forward Sean Burns paved the way for the Bulldog offense, netting 17 points on six of nine shooting. Freshman forward Brandon Myer continues to impress through two games, picking up 14 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Two other UMD players — sophomore guard Trevor Entwisle (13) and freshman forward Luke Harris (11) — notched double-digit points.

The Bulldogs and Lions matched up evenly in nearly every statistical category, including a 45.9 field goal percentage for UMD as opposed to 45.8% for LU. As was the case Friday night, the Bulldogs were largely outshot at the free throw line. Lindenwood knocked in 24 of 26 from the charity stripe, while UMD cashed in on nine of nine.

The Bulldogs and Lions traded baskets for much of the first half, with neither team holding more than a four point lead in the opening 15 minutes. Lindenwood held a 28-27 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half, then sparked a five point run and 10 of the next 12 points to pull ahead by nine. The Lions extended their lead to double-digits once, holding a 41-31 edge. A few minutes later, Entwisle knocked down a shot with just three seconds remaining in the half to cut the deficit to just three.

UMD was never able to grasp a lead in the second half, despite being within eight points all 20 minutes. With 13:23 remaining, Lindenwood led by a score of 54-48, but the Bulldogs grabbed the next six points to bring the game to a tie, capped off by another Entwisle three-pointer. Later on, the Lions held a 72-65 lead with 2:40 left to play. UMD clawed back to push the score within two, 74-72, but was unable to score in the final 49 seconds. A pair of free throws by Lindenwood’s LJ McIntosh put the Lions up by five with just seconds remaining and sealed the victory.

The Bulldogs move to 0-2 on the young season, and will return to the court on Nov. 22 as they travel to Marquette, Mich. to face Northern Michigan University.
