Rebels Outlast Eskomos

Cade Pierson – NSO

The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels traveled to Esko Friday night as they would emerge with a hard-fought victory 36-33 thanks to their impressive rushing attack.

In the first quarter, Moose Lake’s Isaac Riihiluoma pushed in a quick 5-yard score to give the Rebels the lead early on.

Esko would answer in the second quarter though, on a Stone DeLeon 1-yard run, however not converting the 2-point conversion.

Dawsen Cossalter gave Esko the lead on a 7-yard rush for six.

It was the Rebels turn to reply with a score of their own, as running back Bryceton Butkiewicz pounded in a 2-yard touchdown run, giving the Rebels a slim 14-13 lead at halftime.

The Eskomos got things going in a big way to start the third quarter, as DeLeon connected with Cossalter on a 78-yard touchdown bomb to regain the Esko lead.

The Rebels would strike back eventually, scoring two back-to-back touchdowns in time thanks to a 1-yard Butkiewics rush, and 16-yard interception return from Ryan Barrett.

30-20 early in the fourth quarter, Esko’s Ben Fischer hauled in a 9-yard touchdown strike from DeLeon to tighten things up.

Butkiewicz notched his third touchdown on the ground courtesy of a 9-yard plunge, propelling the Rebels to a 36-26 lead with little time left to play.  Esko’s DeLeon would throw another touchdown dart, this time to Reid Davidson on a 38-yarder, bringing the score to a close final of 36-33.

Esko is now 0-3 on the season, while the Rebels advance to 3-0.
