The visiting McGregor Mercs held off the Carlton Bulldogs Friday night as the Dogs made it a very close game late in the fourth quarter.

McGregor struck first, as quarterback Joey Glunz connected with Billy Staska on a long 74-yard pass on third down to take the first-possession lead quickly.

Carlton would answer with a field goal from Evan Grey, making it 6-3 before the Mercs marched down the field and pounded in a 4-yard run courtesy of Brody Simonson.

Before the half, Glunz would add to the McGregor lead, running in an 11-yard score for the 19-3 halftime lead.

There would be no scoring from both sides in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs tried to complete a 15-point comeback, as Keijo Day hauled in a 43-yard pass from quarterback Kaden Crane to cut the deficit to eight points.

Carlton couldn’t finish it off however, failing to secure a few deep passes near the end zone, eventually losing 18-10.

The Dogs will face off with rival Wrenshall next Friday at home, as they will look to get their first win on the young season.  McGregor hosts Floodwood next week as they will try to continue to add to the win column.
