Carlton Wins Key Polar League Game

The Carlton Bulldogs won an important Polar League conference matchup on Thursday night over the McGregor Mercuries, 19-17.

The Bulldogs got out to a quick 11-0 lead in the 1st inning, but the Mercs continued to chip away inning by inning to take a late 16-15 lead going into the top of the 7th. In the top of the 7th, the Bulldogs rallied and scored 4 to regain the lead and hold onto the victory by a final of 19-17.

Peyton Schmidt got the victory for the Bulldogs, pitching 4 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 5 batters. At the plate, Evan Gray powered the offense for the Bulldogs going 4-6 with a double and 7 RBI’s. Also chipping in at the plate was Leif Herman who went 3-4 with 2 RBI’s, Sam Macor who went 3-5 with an RBI, and Chase Parker, who came in as a substitute, went 2-2 with an RBI.

For the Mercs, Johnny Huspek went 5-5 with 2 RBI’s. Bill Staska had a nice day at the plate, going 3-5 with a double and 4 RBI’s, while teammate Zach Hawkinson went 2-6 with 2 RBI’s in the loss.

The Bulldogs improve to 4-8 on the year and will be back in action on May 7th when they travel to play a double header against Deer River and Nashwauk-Keewatin in Nashwauk. The first game will be play at 10:00am. The Mercs drop to 3-8 on the year and will look to bounce back on May 10th when they travel to play Hill City.
