Brotherly-love and playing for a fallen comrade came through Saturday for the Minneota High School football team.
Senior fullback Garrett Hennen handled the lion’s share of Minneota’s rushing attack with 2,056 yards in leading the Vikings to the Prep Bowl for a second consecutive season. But when he went down with a knee injury in the first quarter, the Vikings didn’t panic.
With their rushing leader on the sideline, leaning on crutches and a heavy ice bag strapped around his left knee, his teammates marched onward.
Sophomore Isaac Hennen, Garrett’s younger brother, helped pick up the slack, rushing for 103 yards and scoring three touchdowns to propel the Vikings to a 35-18 victory over Minneapolis North in the Class A championship game at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.
Bryce Bruner rushed for 107 yards and scored a TD as the Vikings (14-0) won the Class A title for the second consecutive season and fifth time overall.

Quarterback Alex Pohlen completed 9 of 12 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Hennen, a cousin of Garrett and Isaac, had three receptions, a touchdown and an interception in thwarting North’s opportunity to win a Prep Bowl championship for the first time for any Minneapolis City Conference school.
Minneapolis Washburn won football state titles in 1972 and ’77, but that was before the Prep Bowl Era began in 1982.
Hennen scored on a 3-yard run with 11:16 left in the fourth quarter It capped an 8-play, 45-yard drive that gave the Vikings a 27-18 lead.
It also came on the heels of a 15-play North (12-1) drive that lasted a good chunk of the third quarter, but it ended when Tyler Johnson threw an interception in the end zone.
Through three quarters, Johnson, a University of Minnesota recruit, had 294 of North’s 325 yards of total offense.
He finished with 186 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also completed 11 of 23 passes for 109 yards and another TD, but also threw two interceptions. He finished with 254 yards of total offense.
