NSO – NEWS RELEASE

The Class AA championship trophy is returning to a familiar place, 160 miles away in the southeast corner of Minnesota.

Caledonia High School, which has had a stranglehold on the Class AA crown, winning it five times from 2007-12, grabbed it again on Friday with a 40-0 victory over Pipestone in the Prep Bowl championship game at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.

The Warriors’ powerful offensive attack and ball-hawking defense took control early in building a 33-0 lead at the half.

Caledonia was sharp in the first half, compiling 258 yards on 31 plays. The Warriors, though, held the ball for just 8:42, nearly half as long as Pipestone, which could muster just 104 yards of total offense.

Alex Goergen had two touchdown receptions in the first half from Owen King and Sam Stemper had two rushing touchdowns. King punctuated a dominant first half with a picture-perfect 39-yard touchdown pass to Nick McCabe along the near sideline with 49 seconds left in the second quarter.

King finished 13 of 19 for 207 yards and four touchdowns. Along with his two touchdowns, Stemper rushed for 172 yards on 20 carries.

The Warriors held the Arrows to 33 rushing yards on 28 plays in the first half. The second half didn’t get much better as the fourth quarter was played in running time because Caledonia was leading by at least 35 points.

Pipestone had 127 yards of total offense on 59 plays. The Arrows were held to 56 yards on 46 attempts.

Caledonia has won seven state championship in 11 tournament appearances.
Pipestone, which lost in the semifinals last season, was looking for its first state championship season.
