Bird Powers Rebels in Season Opener

Rebels Center Jessica Bird picked up where she left off last season as the junior forward scored three goals and added two assists as the Lady Rebels defeated the North Shore Storm by a final score of 7-2.

Bird who ended the season last year with 75 points in the regular season ended with 5 points on the night . Bird assisted on the Lady Rebels first goal as off the faceoff she put a shot on net minder Grace Hietala and it was Sage Gerard who put the rebound past Hietala for the games first goal.

The Storm tied the game minutes later on a Cora Carter goal to make it 1-1 as the first period would end 1-1. The Rebels would take advantage of penalties by the Storm in the second when Ruby Mohelsky scored an unassisted power play goal. Bird then scored her first goal of the night with the assist to her sister Jamie again a power play goal.

Everly Bauck cut the Rebels lead to 3-2 early in the third period but four third period goals would end and chance of a storm comeback. It was Asia Gobel scoring at 5:52 of the third period with assists to Jessica Bird and Sage Gerard. Mohelsky netted her second goal of the game again a power play goal as Josie Benize had the lone assist.

Jessica Bird then added the next two Rebel goals to finish with the 7-2 margin of victory. Gobel added assists on both goals while Jamie Bird picked up her second assist on the last goal by her sister.

Maddy Gamst stopped 14 of the 16 shots she faced Friday night in the win, while Hietala for the Storm ended with 29 saves int he loss.
