Jake Malec and John Aase combined for five touchdowns and the Proctor Rails used a strong second half to pull away to a 34-14 win over the Cloquet Lumberjacks in high school football on Friday night.

The Rails opened the scoring when Malec slipped in from the six yard line in teh first quarter and then Aase booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. That would be the only score of the opening quarter.

Joe Gotchnik made things interesting for the Jacks when he bolted 37-yards to pay dirt, and after Rob Sobczak’s extra point kick the Jacks had evened things early in the second quarter at 7-7. That would be the last time the teams would be even on the scoreboard.

Before the end of the first half the Rails got a nifty 50-yard touchdown run by Aase that put them up 13-7 at halftime after the extra point kick sailed wide right.

Malec opened the all important third quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge to push the Rails lead to 21-7 after a two point conversion run by Chase Urie. Malec followed with another touchdown run in the third quarter, this time from two yards out to push the lead to 27-7 after the conversion run failed, but the score had the Jacks in a deep hole entering the fourth quarter.

Cloquet’s Jeb Leone cut into the Rails lead with a five yard quarterback keeper and after Sobczak nailed the extra point the Jacks had pulled to within 27-14. Again the Rails responded, this time on a Aase to Malec touchdown pass of a yard which gave Proctor a 34-14 lead after the extra point boot by Aase.

The Rails rolled up 462 yards in a balanced attack that included 202 yards through the air and 260 yards on the ground while averaging over seven yards per play against the Cloquet defense.

With the win the Rails improved to 4-2 overall and Cloquet falls to 2-4.
