Cromwell Stings Hornets In Opener

The defending Section 5 9-man champion, Cromwell Cardinals hosted the Hill City Hornets on Monday evening in a make-up game from Saturday night. The Cardinals would topple the Hornets, defeating them 42-6 in the season opener.

Cromwell got off to a quick 8-0 lead when quarterback Zion Smith connected from 8 yards out to Dillon Hoff. Smith then converted the two point attempt. Hoff scored once again in the 1st quarter, this time on a 7 yard run to make it a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st.

In the 2nd quarter, Smith scampered into the end zone from 9 yards out and then connected with Carter Karppinen for the 2 point conversion to make it 22-0. Smith would help make it 28-0, throwing a dart to Samuel Kemper from 31 yards.

In the 3rd quarter, Sawyer Strelnieks turned on the jets to find the end zone after a 45 yard run. Eli Warpula would top the scoring off the for Cardinals, pushing in from 5 yards out in the 4th quarter to give them a 42-0 lead. Hill City’s lone score came from a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Cromwell starts their year off 1-0 and will look to build off this victory when they travel to play Ogilvie on August 28th.
