Late Comeback Give Jacks Victory

Allie Wojtysiak’s RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Lindsey Lamirande with the game winning run Tuesday as the Cloquet Lumberjacks came from behind to beat the Mora Mustangs 5-3 to advance into the double elimination portion of the girls section 7AA playoffs.

Lamirande who was running for Jade Benko who reached base when her ground ball hit to shortstop Stephanie Cannon,  was thrown home in the attempt to throw out Rosalie Lundquist, but the throw home was dropped the the catcher Shelby Kolu as Cloquet tied the game at 3-3.

Allie Wojtysiak then ripped a fly ball to the gap in left center field to bring in Lamirande and would give Cloquet a 4-3 lead. Wojtysiak scored the final run of the bottom of the sixth inning to give Cloquet a 5-3 lead. That inning started when senior third baseman Abbey Wangen singled to start the inning, she moved to second on a misplayed pitch by catcher Kolu, and with Wangen in scoring position Wangen was pinch ran for by Lundquist.

“Lundquist is the second fastest girl on our team”, assistant head coach Kerry Rodd told Northland Sports Online, all us coaches talked about what we would do when we got a runner on base, and in what situation and it came about almost like we had discussed” Rodd added.

The Lumberjacks who entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing by one run and seen 13 consecutive batters retired in order by Mora pitcher Brooke Oslin.

Mora jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Tuesday but the Lumberjacks responded in the bottom of the inning as Makayla Langenbrunner singled to start the inning, she moved to second on a a sacrifice bunt from Erin Dahnke, Abbey Wangen then single putting runners on 1st and third.

Wangen then stole second setting up two runners in scoring position, and both scored scored on a RBI single from Kassidy Steen. Mora went back in front in the top of the fourth inning scoring two runs on three hits in the inning.

Kaylee McMillen was the winning pitcher Tuesday for the Lumberjacks picking up her 13th win on the season, she also had two hits and a RBI in the Cloquet win.

Wangen also finished with 2 hits in the win and she scored 2 runs for the Lumberjacks. Taylor Sunsvold finished with three hits for Mora and score of of their 3 runs, Kolu added two hits and she drove in two runs for the Mustangs.

Stephanie Cannon drove in the other Mora run with a RBI double in the third inning. Mora with the loss finishes the season with a record of 5-15. Cloquet improves to 13-7 and will face International Falls on Thursday at 12:00 at Braun Park in Cloquet.
