Mercs Edge Bulldogs

The McGregor Mercuries traveled to take on the Carlton Bulldogs on Thursday evening, edging the Bulldogs 4-2. The Bulldogs committed 9 errors in the loss which led to 3 unearned runs.

The Bulldogs struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st inning when Mike Moralez hit a RBI double to scored Jackson Mickle. The score would remain 1-0 until the 6th innings when the Mercs scored on a throwing error, making it 1-1.

The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the 6th inning, when Moralez hit another RBI double, this time driving in Josh Dallman, making it 2-1. The Mercs would then score 3 runs in the top of the 7th to make it 4-2. The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game up. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jackson Mickle hit a screaming line drive at the 1st baseman who would come up with it, ending the Bulldogs comeback attempt.

Cole Hoover got the victory for the Mercs, going 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits. He struck out 10 batters and walked 3 in the win. He would also help his cause at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, driving in 2 runs and scoring a run. Trevor Heagle also went 2-4 in the win.

Josh Dallman got the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching 7 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on 6 hits. He struck out 5 and only walked 1 in the loss. Mike Moralez went 2-3 in the loss with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Evan Gray and Jackson Mickle each went 1-3 in the loss.

The Mercuries improve to 3-6 on the season and will look for another win when they play Hill City on May 4th. The Bulldogs drop to 2-7 on the season and will look to bounce back when they play a double header against Deer River and Nashwauk-Keewatin on May 2nd.
