The Ashland Oredockers used the three-hit pitching of Eric Yachinich and his 4-for-4 night at the plate to  defeat the  Denfeld Hunters 5-1 at Wade Stadium on Thursday afternoon in Lake Superior Conference baseball action.

The Oredockers threatened in the top of the second when with one out Hunter Guastafson singled and stole second. After a ground out, he tried to score on a Mason Mountain base hit but was cut down at the plate on a nice throw from Duluth Denfeld center-fielder Ben Gibson.

Ashland broke through with four runs in the third when Sam Jablonski reached on an error and Sam Nemec reached on fielder’s choice. John Sechen moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Wyatt O’Bey squeeze bunt scored Jablonski, and Yachinich drilled a double to score Nemec. Courtesy runner Bryan Simmons scored on a Matt Tarasewicz single. Tarasewicz then scored on a RBI single by Gustafson to make it 4-0.

The Oredockers added to their lead in the fourth when Jablonski drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on an O’Bey single.

The Hunter’s made it 5-1 in the sixth when with one out Jake Decaro reached on a fielders choice, Adam Sykes walked and Andy Kaptonak singled to load the bases. Brody Russell hit a ground ball to score DeCaro and no play was made so the bases remained filled, but Yachinich buckled down to get a pop out and a strike out to end the threat.

Denfeld fall to 4-8 on the season and they will face Hermantown Friday afternoon. Ashland improves to 7-3 overall and will face Rice Lake on Saturday.
