The Cloquet softball team proved they can score in multiple ways on Friday night in a grind-it-out 4-3 win over Greenway at Braun Park in Cloquet.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning the Jacks parlayed a couple of hits, a bunt, and an error into three runs in taking a 3-2 lead. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, senior third baseman Abbey Wangen crushed a laser beam home run deep to left field that gave the Jacks a 4-2 edge.

After taking the lead the Jacks snuffed out sixth inning rally by the Raiders before giving up a run in the top of the seventh and then slamming the door on a solid pitching performance by senior thrower Kaylee McMillen.

McMillen scattered 10-hits and fanned four in out-dueling Greenway pitcher Rylie Donahue who gave up seven hits and struck out two. McMillen’s battery mate, Jade Benko, was impressive defensively by throwing out a pair of would-be base stealers which helped thwart the Raiders hopes of winning the road game.

Wangen and Makayla Langenbruner both bashed out a pair of hits for the Jacks who won their season opener on a bright and sunny day in Cloquet.

The Lumberjacks will play today, Saturday, April 11th at 1pm at home against the Mora Mustangs.
