The University of Minnesota Duluth will kick off the 2015 football season against the same club it closed out 2014 against — fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference co-champion Minnesota State University-Mankato. Those two arch rivals collided in the NCAA II playoff quarterfinals last December in Mankato, Minn., and that opening-night rematch is among the highlights of the 2015 Bulldog schedule, which was released today.

For the fourth consecutive year, UMD will face solely Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents — 11 in all — during the regular season. That begins on Thursday night, Sept. 3, when Bulldogs pays a visit to Minnesota State-Mankato’s Blakesee Stadium to launch their 83rd season of intercollegiate football. The Bulldogs, who were 13-1 overall, captured a share of their league-record 19th overall NSIC title won a seventh consecutive NSIC North Division crown, and secured a seventh straight NCAA II playoff berth last fall, will make their home debut the following weekend against Wayne State College before returning to the road for another challenging assignment with the University of Sioux Falls on Sept. 19. The Cougars of USF went 11-1 one year ago and, after narrowly missing out on an NCAA II playoff bid, throttled the University of Central Oklahoma 42-10 in the Mineral Water Bowl. UMD will also face Upper Iowa University (UMD Family Weekend on Sept. 26), St. Cloud State University (Homecoming on Oct. 10), the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMD Faculty/Staff Day on Oct. 24) and Minot State University (Senior Day on Nov. 14) at James S. Malosky Stadium, where the Bulldogs have rolled up a sizzling 49-1 record in NSIC play since Oct. 21, 2000.

“With every season brings new challenges and opportunities for our program,” said third-year head coach Curt Wiese. “Our team has a lot of work to do both on and off of the field in preparation for our opening game.”

The Bulldogs, who own the best winning percentage (.896 off an 86-10 record) of any NCAA II team in the country over the past seven seasons, opened spring practice this past Tuesday (March 31) and will hold their 41st annual Maroon-White Game on April 24 at 6 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
