Greyhounds Fall in Title Game

The Lakeville North Panthers defended their perfect record and earned their first-ever state hockey title with a 4-1 victory over Duluth East Greyhounds on Saturday night at the Xcel energy Center.

This was the year of the Panther as they entered the tournament with an unblemished record and then skated easily to the title with a 4-1 quarterfinal victory against Hill-Murray, a 6-2 semifinal win over Eden Prairie in the semifinal round and a 4-1 victory against the Greyhounds.

The Panthers were strong offensively and defensively all night. They were led in scoring by the Poehling trio – Nick had one goal and three assists, Jack had a goal and two assists and Ryan scored the first goal of the game.

Senior defenseman Angelo Altavilla rounded out the scoring with the goal he flipped into the net quicker than the senior goaltender Gunnar Howg could cover.

The unseeded Duluth East Greyhounds had a magical run that just fell one game short of the title. The Greyhounds upset no. 3 seed St. Thomas Academy in the quarterfinal run before dethroning a two time back-to-back defending champion, nine time consecutive tournament attendee and no. 2 seed Edina in the semifinals on Friday.

Junior forward Ryan Peterson scored the lone goal for the Greyhounds.

Lakeville North outshot Duluth East by a 23 to 13 margin.

A new all-time boys’ hockey tournament attendance record was set this tournament with 135,618 fans attending Class A and AA sessions at Xcel Energy Center and Mariucci Arena. The previous all-tournament attendance record was set in 2008 when 129,643 attended the historic tournament.
