Lakeview Edges Carlton

The 3rd seeded Lakeview Christian Academy Lions and 6th seeded Carlton Bulldogs met in Hermantown on Thursday night in the 2nd round of the Section 7A playoffs. The Lions would edge the scrappy Bulldogs, 85-77 to advance to the next round.

Carlton got off to a hot start, leading 11-4, behind Eric Soderstrom’s hot shooting from beyond the arch. The game would continue to go back and forth until the final minutes where the Lions pulled away a bit to a 14 point lead at the half, up 46-32.

The Lions would come out roaring in the 2nd half, starting on a 7-0 run to take a 21 point lead. They would increase that lead to 26 points with around 10 minutes left in the half, but the Bulldogs would continue to battle, cutting the lead down to 13 with 5 minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs continued their hot shooting from beyond the arc, eventually cutting the Lions lead down to 5 points with just 2 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs would outscore the Lions 45-39 in the 2nd half, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Lions held onto the 85-77 victory.

The Bulldogs tough and physical defense held Bjorn Broman to 37 points, which is 12 points under his average, in the loss. Broman hit 7 threes in the win and would snag a triple double however, grabbing down 13 boards and hooking up with 13 assists. Also scoring for the Lions was Marc Chiu who tallied 20, Josh Klun who pitched in 12, Sam Easty who added 8, Colt Bates who scored 6, and Josh Emerson who rounded it out with 2.

In the loss for the Bulldogs, Tyler Ojibway scored a team high 22 points, including 5 from three. Eric Soderstrom followed with 15 points, Adam Ermatinger tallied 13, Cade Pierson chipped in 9, Matt Hey scored 8, Dominic Bennett punched in 6, Jackson Mickle added 3, and Waylon Lekander rounded it out with 1.

The Lakeview Christian Academy Lions improve to 18-9 on the season and will play the Fond Du Lac Ogichida, who they lost to on February 19th, 116-92, on February 28th at UMD’s Romano Gym with a tipoff of 5:45.

The Bulldogs ended their season with a 8-18 record and will lose three starters off next years team.
