In a battle of the top two seeded teams in Class A hockey, the Hermantown Hawks escaped with a 5-2 victory over their rivals the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers.

The Hawks got out to the early lead why Ryan Kero and Nate Pionk connected with Cole Koepke at the 5:28 mark to take the early 1-0 lead into the 2nd period.

In the 2nd period, the Hawks scored again when Jesse Jacques assisted James Lindberg to increase their lead the 2-0. The Hilltoppers would respond close to 5 minutes later when Nate Johnson scored an unassisted goal to cut the Hawks lead down to 2-1. Hermantown got back up by 2 goals at the 15 minute mark of the period when Jacques scored from a Wyatt Aamodt pass on a power play to go up 3-1.

Duluth Marshall would chip into that lead early in the 3rd period when Rudy Erickson assisted a Levi Stauber goal, making it just a 3-2 lead for the Hawks. Hermantown’s Kyle Amundson would score an unassisted goal at the 13 minute mark, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Hawks. Koepke would score just 30 seconds later, with Kero and Pionk assisting, to secure the 5-2 victory for the Hawks.

The Hawks improve to 14-2 on the season and will look to continue their winning ways on January 17th when they take on Bemidji. The Hilltoppers fall to 12-2-1 on the year and will look to bounce back on January 17th when they play Hibbing/Chisholm.
