NSO – NEWS RELEASE

The University of Minnesota Duluth lost the lead just twice, each midway through the second half, and never trailed by more than a basket as the Bulldogs held off a second-half rally to down Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival the University of Minnesota-Crookston 72-67 at Romano Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

UMD (7-7, 5-5 NSIC) returned to the .500 mark for a fresh start to the season’s second half while knocking off its NSIC North division foe Minnesota Crookston (6-8, 5-5 NSIC)

HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior guards Jessica Newman (20) and Danielle Flood (19) led the UMD scoring, each nailing a trio of three-pointers. Flood and junior forward Taylor Meyer (15 points) led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds each, while sophomore center Allyson Harris added 13 points and five boards off the bench.
• Senior guard Alexa Theilman scored 20 points and hauled in six rebounds, while senior center Katrina Moenkedick netted 19 for the Eagles. Megan Taylor would finish with a team-high eight boards off the bench.
UMD hauled in 14 rebounds on the offensive end and made good on them, netting 18 points on second chances while also scoring 14 points on 15 UMC turnovers, including nine steals. All together, the Bulldogs made good on enough of their extra chances to edge Crookston as the two teams were nearly identical: UMD with 24 baskets, 8 from beyond the arc, and 16 points from the free throw line while the Eagles scored 23 baskets, 6 from three-point range, and 15 at the line.

The Bulldogs took a three-point lead to the half and quickly turned it into a seven-point lead, but UMC scored the next seven points to pull even at 44-all with 13:33 remaining and took its first lead of the game thanks to a Christine Thorn three-pointer at 50-48 with just under 11 minutes on the clock. UMD quickly tied it up and would eventually regain the lead at 55-54 thanks to a Danielle Flood three-pointer. The Eagles again scored a go-ahead basket with 4:43 to go on a steal by Moenkedick, but UMD outscored them 8-2 down the stretch thanks in large part to three scores from the charity stripe by senior guard Alyssa Kerkhoff.
