Duluth East entered Thursday evenings boys high school hockey game as a heavy favorite against the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks.  Despite the high ranking the Greyhounds had to struggle for a 3-1 victory over the Jacks that included an empty net goal.

After East grabbed a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Ryan Peterson, the Lumberjacks fought back with an unusual goal late in the second period that evened the score at 1-1.  As play in the second period was winding down the Jacks sent the puck down ice into the Greyhound zone.

The Lumberjacks raced after the puck and eventually rammed the puck past East netminder Gunnar Howg with .5 seconds remaining in the second period.  Scoring the goal for the Jacks was Cole Litsey with assists going to Dalton Johnson and Tyler Chicos.

The Greyhounds finally got the go-ahead goal at the 12:12 mark of the third period from Luke Dow a Duluth Marshall transfer and then Luke LaMaster added an empty net goal at 15:45 of the final period to end the scoring.
