NSO – NEWS RELEASE

The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team has signed two Minnesota natives in Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.) and Reagan Haley (Red Wing, Minn.) in the early signing period.

Rooney is a name that has recently become familar for Duluth hockey fans, as the 5-6 goaltender currently plays for the Andover boys high school team that tied No.10 Duluth East last weekend 2-2 behind Rooney’s 41 saves.  After playing the past two seasons with the Huskies girls’ team, Rooney joined the boys’ team with the goal of accelerating her college development.  Last season, she led the girls program to its first-ever Class 2A state tournament appearance, where she made the All-Tournament Team.  As a junior, she received All-Conference and All-State Honorable mention accolades, and as a sophomore, garnered Second-Team All-Metro status prior to Third-Team All-Metro last season.

A three-time U.S. national camp attendee, she played on the U-18 USA series against Canada in 2013.  Rooney, a member of the 2013-14 US National Team, was the one of the only US goalies to lead the U-18 US National Team to a one and only victory over Canada in the August Canada/US Series of that year.  Last year she was also invited to USA’s Top-6 Goaltending camp, where she had an opportunity to highlight her skills against the US U-17 Boy’s National Development players.

Coach Shannon Miller says — “We are really excited about adding a top Minnesota Goaltender to our 2015 line up.  This year Maddie has also chosen to play for her Andover Boys Minn. High School team in lieu of playing the for the girl’s team. Maddie is an excellent goalie and she moves very well. She is tectonically strong and always has a presents in the net. She is extremely quick and also can move the puck hard.  She is going to be an excellent addition to our Bulldog team.”
