Northern Stars Drop Two

The Northern Stars dropped a pair of games over this past weekend to two teams ranked in the state girls hockey polls. Friday night saw the Red Knights of Benilde St. Margaret knock off the Northern Stars by a score of 3-1, as it was two first period goals to much to overcome for the Stars.

With Benilde leading by a score of 2-0 after goals from Megan Cornell and Xandi Swedberg the Stars bounced back in the second period when Cassie McClure scored for the Stars at 4:08 of the second period to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Sydney Schuman and Brionna Stafne had the assists on the Cornell goal.

The third period saw only one goal and that was a empty net goal with 38 second remaining to give Benilde the 3-1 win. Kalei  Kleive  stopped 30 of the 32 shots she faced.

Saturday the Northern Stars had the daunting task of taking on the state top ranked team in Class A the Blake Bears, as the Bears pounded 17 shots on goal in the first period the Stars found themselves trailing by a score of 4-0 after one period of play. Each team scored three goals in the second period as the Bears held a 7-3 advantage heading into the third period.

Cassie McClure, Montanna Vitiala, and Brionna Stafne scored the second period goals for the Northern Stars a the Stars lost for the second day to a state ranked team. Blake added one third period goal to make it a 8-3 final. Kleive finished with 27 saves for the Northern Stars.
