Bulldogs Sweep Colorado

The University of Minnesota Duluth put an exclamation point on its final home appearance of 2014 Saturday night by throttling Colorado College 7-2 and wrapping up its first series sweep at AMSOIL Arena since March 2012.

No. 8 UMD got goals from seven different players, including junior defenseman Andy Welinski, who scored once and added two assists. Senior right winger Adam Krause (one goal, one assist), junior left winger Austin Farley (one goal, one assist), rookie right winger Karson Kuhlman (two assists) and junior center Cal Decowski (two assists) all had two-point evenings for the Bulldogs, now 11-5-0 overall and 7-3-0-0 in the NCHC.

UMD led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 at the second intermission on its way to posting its seventh win in the last eight games. The Bulldogs also outshot the Tigers (3-10-0; 0-7-0-0) 43-18 on the night.

“Our depth is so important,” said Welinski, who has a career-high six goals this season.  “I think as much as you like ot have everyone clicking on the same night, that’s not always going to be the case. But tonight all the lines were pretty consistent. Being able to wear teams down is something we should be able to use to our advantage because of that depth.”

After being blanked on the power play in each of its previous three outings, UMD went one-for-four with the man advantage Saturday (with that goal coming from Welinski in the second period). UMD rookie Kasimir Kaskisuo, making his 13 consecutive start in goal, made 16 saves while improving to 10-4-0.

The Bulldogs will be in Houghton, Mich., next Friday and Saturday night for a two-game non-conference set with former Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival.
