NSO – NEWS RELEASE

10-1-1 in their last 12 games.  Ranked No. 6 in the current PairWise Rankings and firmly in third place in the NCAA’s toughest conference. And the Bulldogs have only wrapped up the first part of the 2014-15 season.

The No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team used a three-goal outburst in the second period to push past Ohio State 4-1 in Columbus, Ohio in a Westerm Collegiate Hockey Association showdown that will mark the last action for the Bulldogs of 2014.  With the win — UMD’s 10th in 12 games, and 11th if you count last night’s shootout — the Bulldogs improve to 12-5-3 overall and 7-5-2 in the WCHA.

After a scoreless first period, the Buckeyes used a power play goal 2:32 into the second stanza to take the early 1-0 lead, but it would be the only lead OSU would have for the rest of the game.  Senior winger and current Bulldog leading goal scorer Zoe Hickel netted her 12th goal of the season at the 6:18 mark.  A little over six minutes later, senior forward Meghan Huertas would upend a Buckeye power play by burying a shorthanded goal at 13:04 to hand the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage, their first lead over OSU in the series.  Huertas’ unassisted seventh goal of the year would be followed by UMD’s third unanswered goal of the period, which came at 17:32 off the stick of Katerina Mrázová.

Senior winger Jenna McParland iced the game with 2:21 remaining in the third period, finishing off Ashleigh Brykaliuk‘s second helper of the game to  secure the 4-1 triumph for the Bulldogs.

UMD outshot the Buckeyes 29-21 and junior goaltender Kayla Black had 20 saves.  The Bulldogs were held scoreless on their power play in six attempts, and went 6-of-7 with their penalty kill.

It will be Jan. 10, 2015 before UMD hits the ice against outside competition again.  The Bulldogs will host the only team that has stolen a win from them since Oct. 17 — Bemidji State University — at AMSOIL Arena.  Game-time is slated for 6:07 p.m.
