It had been a long time coming, but it finally happened Friday night as the Wrenshall Wrens picked up their first win of the season and the first win for the Girls Basketball program since January of 2009. The Wrens playing as part of a boys and girls double header in Silver Bay knocked off the Mariners by a final score of 51-34.

The losing streak had put the Wrens at 0-10 so far this season; last year the Wrens were 0-25, and they had lost the last 10 games of the season in 2009 for a losing streak of 45 consecutive games. That is all over now as Wrenshall picks up the win and also a very important conference victory on Friday.

The Wrenshall Wrens jumped out to the early first half lead to lead by four points, 22-18 at the break. The second half saw Wrenshall continue to add to their lead and go on to win this game by seventeen points.

Maria Burcar led the Wrens in scoring with 20 points on the night. She was followed by Sydney Ellerbe with 10, Natalie Peaney scored 8, Taylor Dagger finished with 6 points, Samantha Oland added 5, and Brittney O’Brien added 2 in the Wrenshall win.

Alicia Nopola led the Mariners in scoring as she finished with 14 points. Allana Lampton and Tara Dow each chipped in with 8 points, Abby Michaels and Emma Benoit each had 2 points in the Silver Bay loss.

The Wrens move to 1-10 on the season and are in action again on Monday night when they look to make it two wins in a row as they face Fond du Lac Ojibwe at Fond du Lac School. The Ogichida enter Monday night’s matchup winless on the season. Silver Bay falls to 1-10 overall on the season; they will host AlBrook on Monday night.
