The University of Minnesota Duluth rebounded from its season-opening defeat with a decisive 73-63 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the annual border battle at Romano Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

UMD (1-1) pulled away late in the closing moments of the first half and held on the rest of the way to send UW-Superior back across the bridge with an 0-3 record.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Junior forward Taylor Meyer put together a double-double for UMD as one of three Bulldogs to hit double digits scoring with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Danielle Flood also added 14 points with a perfect 10-for-10 peformance at the free throw line, along with 10 points from sophomore center Allyson Harris. Sophomore forward Kenzie Kane had 10 points off the bench.
• UWS was led by senior guard Sally Linzmeier, who added 19 points for the Yellowjackets, along with Brynn Liljander, who netted 14. Linzmeier also had a team-high eight rebounds for UWS.

After an initial flurry that saw the Bulldogs jump up 8-2, UWS rallied back to eventuall tie the game at 12-all thanks in large part to a pair of threes from Liljander. The teams would trade points to a 27-27 draw. UMD built up a six point lead when Kenzie Kane grabbed a steal and made a lay-in on the fast break, but a pair of free throws by Liljander with just seconds left on the clock. With one last look to put some space between them and the Yellowjackets, the Bulldogs turned to Meyer who drilled a three-pointer to give UMD a seven-point lead going into the break.

The Bulldogs built up their lead to 17 points with 6:21 remaining and held off a late Yellowjacket run thanks in large part to an 8-for-8 performance at the charity stripe from Flood, despite the fact that UWS out-shot UMD 41.9 percent to 34.8 percent in the second half. For the game, the Yellowjackets just edged UMD, 43.5 to 41.7 percent.

“It doesn’t matter who you are playing, it’s good to get a win,” said coach Annette Wiles after the game. “Give Superior credit: the level of excitement they showed early matched where we were against the [University of Wisconsin] Badgers.” She added, “Where we didn’t execute late in the game against Michigan Tech, we did here. It’s a credit to all our players.”

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will be on the road the rest of the week as they travel to the Winstead-Reeves Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State University. The action gets underway Friday when UMD takes on Pittsburg State University at 5:00 p.m.
