Section Swimmers Move to State

Three section swim meets finished up around the region Saturday as the Section 5A championship was held in Duluth, it was section 7A in Grand Rapids, and section 7AA in Coon Rapids and several local swimmers will advance to the state swim meet next week in Minneapolis.

The section 5A team title went to Monticello who finished ahead of Big Lake and Foley who placed third. Proctor-Hermantown was 5th overall, and Cloquet-Esko Carlton was 6th in the team standings.

Heading to the state swim meet from section 5A are Megan Mensinger of Proctor-Hermantown who captured first in the 500 Freestyle and also was 2nd in the 200 Freestyle.

CEC’s Makayla Suominen qualified in three events, she won the 50 freestyle, and was second in the 100 freestyle. She will also swim with her team mates in the 200 freestyle relay as the Lumberjacks took second in that event. Suominen along with Faith Carlson, Lexus Wysocki, and Rachel Gorski will swim at the state tournament.

In the section 7A swim meet in Grand Rapids it was the host Thunderhawks taking first place ahead of Hibbing and Mesabi East. Two Harbors was fourth overall and Denfeld placed sixth on the afternoon.

Two Harbors Alison Mayfield and Leann Fynboh both qualified for two events as Mayfield was second in the 200 freestyle, while she took home top honors in the 500 freestyle. Fynboh will swim in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

Alissa Marlowe will be the lone swimmer from Duluth East at the state meet as she also qualified in two events the 50 freestyle, and also the 100 freestyle. The Greyhounds finished 4th in the section 7AA meet in Coon Rapids.
