HARTMARK, DINCAU WIN AT PUMPKIN RUN
On a spectacular morning for a running race, a field of 257 registered runners and walkers participated in the ninth annual Pumpkin Run and Walk Five Kilometer Race held at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet on Saturday, October 18. The race featured a five-time repeat champion and produced two age-group records on a fast morning for running.
Four-time former Pumpkin Run champion and course record holder Eric Hartmark of Duluth cruised easily ahead of all runners to the finish in a time of 16:52. Hartmark also won the race in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, setting the Pumpkin Run course record of 15:13 in 2009. Brian Granholm of Sturgeon Lake was second overall in 18:18, and Andrew Chapin of Duluth was third in 19:11. Brian Gaus and Robert Smith of Cloquet battled to the finish line, with Gaus edging Smith for fourth place in 19:55.
A first-time Pumpkin Run champion won the women’s division, as Chris Dincau of Duluth was the first female in a time of 22:17. Erika Heins of Duluth was second in 22:42, and Amy Flessert of Superior, WI, finished in third place in 22:50. Cloquet’s Alyssa Wappes was fourth in 23:07, and Leah Hammond of Cloquet was fifth in 23:29 in what proved to be a competitive women’s field.
Additional age group records were established in both men’s and women’s divisions: Tim Krohn of Cloquet set a new mark with a time of 23:35 in the men’s 60-69 age group; and Sharon Archambault of Moose Lake ran 34:40 in the women’s 70 and over age group to establish a record. The Pumpkin Run course is certified by US Track and Field and the results count for points in the annual Minnesota Runner of the Year standings.
“You can tell it’s a good day for running and that people are having fun when you see lots of smiles and happy people crossing the finish line,” said Tom Urbanski, FDLTCC director of public information and who also serves as the Pumpkin Run race director. “The weather was just about perfect for a late-season race, the sun was out and there was essentially no wind. People were having fun, and most stayed after the race for the awards ceremony and to see if they would win a prize in our post-race drawing. And I think the costumes were the best ever this year.”
Many of the race participants helped celebrate the theme and season of the Pumpkin Run event by wearing costumes or orange and black clothing. Among those receiving prizes in the costume division were Paris and Lindsey Kilgore as public television’s celebrity art instructor Bob Ross with a framed painting; the Sandvig family as a wedding party; Addison and Andrew Kozelouzek dressed as surgeon and patient; plus a missile launcher man with his mad scientist buddy; a Harry Potter family; and a bottle of body wash and sponge.
Another Pumpkin Run tradition is awarding medals to the fastest Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College students in the race. This year, Peter Noffsinger of Cloquet won the men’s division in 27:51, and Allison Cassandro of Barnum won the women’s division in 30:03.
The race course started on campus and then followed 14th Street going south to the Valley View neighborhood and then turned around on Harner Lane and returned along 14th Street to the campus. The race was professionally timed by Gopher State Events using RFID electronic chip timing attached to each participant’s race number bib, and individual results were sent to each finisher immediately upon crossing the finish line.
Local businesses helped sponsor the race through prize and refreshment donations, including Super One Foods, Wal-Mart, Duluth Running Company, Tortoise & Hare Footwear, Austin Jarrow, Mellin Promotional Advertising, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Erbert & Gerbert’s, UCare Minnesota, Great Harvest Bakery and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Volunteers and race assistance was provided by Boy Scout Troop #168-Cloquet, Cloquet Police Department, Carlton County Transportation Department, FDLTCC Nursing and Law Enforcement program students, neighbors along the race route, and FDLTCC staff and faculty.
Complete race results are available at www.gopherstateevents.com and a photo gallery is posted on the college Facebook page.
