NSO – NEWS  RELEASE

Oshkosh 1, Superior 0 (2 OT)

Through more than 100 minutes of play Saturday afternoon, neither the UW-Superior men’s soccer team nor the UW-Oshkosh Titans could find a way to score.

One corner-kick in overtime was all it took for the Titans however as Danny Kobin’s header at 106:48 gave UW-Oshkosh a 1-0 double-overtime win over the Yellowjackets at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for UW-Superior (7-4 overall, 2-1 WIAC), which fell despite holding a 12-9 edge in shots for the contest.

Most of the opening half was played in midfield with neither side able to consistently push into the other’s 18-yard box.

Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos) had the best chance of the first half for either team, creating some free space on the right-hand side before his near-post shot was turned away by Titans’ net minder Sam Gabrilska preserving a scoreless draw through halftime.

The second half provided much of the same as offense opportunities proved scarce both ways.

Heading into extra time, the Yellowjackets attempted to push the pace, taking the first overtime’s only two shots before heading into the second extra session still deadlocked at 0-0.

UW-Oshkosh (6-4-1, 1-0) finally claimed the victory in the second overtime when John Schwalbach’s corner found Kobin, whose looping header drifted over Yellowjacket goal tender Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and into the near-post netting to make the final 1-0.

Elder took the loss in goal for UW-Superior with four saves while Ben Kasper (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) had three shots on offense for the Yellowjackets.

Kobin and Jacob Hernandez each had three shots for UW-Oshkosh.  Gabrilska picked up the win in goal with three saves.

The Yellowjackets host Bethel on Tuesday.  Opening kickoff against the Royals is scheduled for 4 p.m.
