Saints Roll Past Crown

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica volleyball swept Crown College 3-0 (25-12, 25-22 and 25-12) Saturday afternoon at the Wild Athletic Center.

With the win the Saints bring their overall record back over the .500 mark improving to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. CSS is currently third in the UMAC behind the University of Northwestern (11-6, 6-0 UMAC) and the University of Minnesota Morris (14-5, 6-1 UMAC). St. Scholastica has lost the first of two UMAC matchups this season to both teams.

Crown entered the contest on a two-game win streak, but with the loss the Storm fall to 4-13 overall and 2-5 against UMAC competition. The Storm’s all-time record against CSS drops to 0-28.

Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) led the CSS in kills with 11. Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) and Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) provided an additional eight kills apiece. Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) and Tannyr Heyl (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS (Saint Benedict)) led St. Scholastica in digs with 18 and 13 each. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had a game-high 21 assists and Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) contributed a season high 17 assists of her own.

Katie Hermann had 10 kills for Crown. Brittany Gamer had a team-high 15 assists and Taylor Urcuyo led the Storm with 19 digs.

The Saints are in action again on Tuesday for their third straight road game against the University of Wisconsin-Stout at 7 p.m.
