Eau Claire 3, Superior 0

Adverse conditions greeted both the UW-Superior women’s soccer team and the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds for their WIAC conference clash Wednesday afternoon.

Despite soggy field conditions, it was the Blugolds that took command early, scoring two goals in the opening 10 minutes on the way to posting a 3-0 victory over UW-Superior at Yellowjacket Field.

The Yellowjackets dropped their third straight contest and fell to 3-7-1 on the season heading into Saturday’s conference matchup with UW-Oshkosh.  The Blugolds meanwhile improved to 3-6-1 and halted a four-game losing streak with the victory.

Playing through a steady rain early in the first half, UW-Eau Claire took the lead just 2:36 into the contest when Sami Matuszak scored unassisted on a partial breakaway for a 1-0 Blugolds’ advantage.

UW-Eau Claire doubled their lead at 6:12 when Lauren Lenz’s sharp-angle cross found its way past Yellowjacket net minder Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul), making it 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Blugolds added an insurance tally at 52:08 when Ashley Seymour tallied on an assist from Tara Dennehy for a 3-0 UW-Eau Claire cushion.

UW-Superior nearly broke the shutout in with 20 minutes left when Rachel Rossiter (Twig, Minn./Proctor) fired a shot from inside the box that bounded off the right post, keeping the score 3-0.

Hannah Buchite (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) also had a pair of good chances in the final 20 minutes, the best of which came on a corner kick from Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) with just over 18 minutes showing on the clock.  The attempt sailed high over the net however, preserving the shutout for UW-Eau Claire goal tender Emily Byal.

For the game, the Blugolds held a 26-4 edge in shots, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Buchite racked up three shots for UW-Superior while Henderson made six saves in taking the loss.

Fallon Peplinski had a game-high four shots for UW-Eau Claire while Byal picked the win with one save in goal.

The Yellowjackets will host UW-Oshkosh at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Saturday.  The time for opening kickoff has yet to be determined.
