Saints Sweep Rams

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team kept up its undefeated conference record defeating North Central University Friday night in a home UMAC matchup sweeping the Rams in three games 25-10, 25-18, and 25-10.

Set one started with an even effort early on with the score staying relatively close after the first 20 collective points saw the Saints out on top 12-8, but an 8-0 run by the Saints with five kills forced the Rams to take a timeout with CSS up 20-8. North Central would be unable to regroup scoring only two more points in the game as the Saints took game one 25-10 with the last point coming on a service ace by Birkeland.

Set two started similarly to game one with the Rams staying with the Saints for the first half of the game. After North Central pulled the game to within two at 14-12 CSS pulled out a 6-0 run that put themselves comfortably on top 20-12. The run was capped off by back to back kills by Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) and Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool).  The Saints would end off winning the game 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was all CSS from the get go. The Saints rattled off scoring streaks of four, five, and eight points in a row as they dominated North Central en route to a 25-10 game three victory earning another sweep of the Rams by a score of 3-0.

Morrin led CSS with 12 kills while Jen Hortness (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) and Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) finished with eight and seven kills respectively. Morrin also had 13 digs which led the team with Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished second tallying nine of her own.

St. Scholastica (8-6, 3-0 UMAC) will next be in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they host the Eagles from the University of Northwestern. Come see the Saints attempt to maintaing their perfect conference record in the Reif Gymnasium or catch the action live at Saints Sports Net.
