NSO – NEWS RELEASE

Superior 2, Finlandia 0

Carrying an unbeaten streak of three games into their non-conference contest with Finlandia Monday afternoon, the UW-Superior women’s soccer hoped their season debut at Yellowjacket Field would yield similar results.

Behind tallies from Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ), the Yellowjackets continued their run of impressive performances in a 2-0 victory that extended UW-Superior’s winning-streak to three straight games.

For the game, UW-Superior held a commanding 33-3 edge in shots attempted, including a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal to up their overall record to 3-4-1.  Finlandia meanwhile dropped to 2-5 with the loss.

The Yellowjackets started quickly in the first half, racking up 16 shots in the opening half while creating several quality scoring opportunities.

UW-Superior cashed in at 24:22 when Marcelius took a feed from Rachel Rossiter (Twig, Minn./Proctor) before cutting to the middle and placing a shot underneath Lions goal tender Adrianna Osuna for a 1-0 lead.

With the Yellowjackets maintaining a one-goal cushion through halftime, UW-Superior continued to pressure in the second half, taking 17 of 18 combined shots by the two sides after halftime.

All UW-Superior’s pressure created a second goal at 82:23 as Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) found Coombs inside the Finlandia penalty area.  Coombs followed up by softly touching a shot into the open net, extending the Yellowjackets’ lead to 2-0.

Finlandia never created another scoring chance as Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) made one save to notch her third straight shutout in goal.

Adams led the Yellowjackets with seven shots while Marcelius finished with six more for UW-Superior.

Osuna took the loss with 14 saves for the Lions.

The Yellowjackets hit the road for their conference-opener against UW-Platteville on Saturday.  Opening kickoff against the Pioneers is scheduled for 11 a.m
