University of Minnesota Duluth head coach Joanna Warmington and her No. 4-ranked Bulldogs were looking to get their 2014 off to a promising start Saturday morning in Northfield, Minn.. And that’s exactly what they did.

UMD placed three runners among the top five finishers and all five of its point scorers in the Top 16  en route to capturing the St. Olaf College Invitational championship for the second straight year. The Bulldogs compiled a team score of 35 points while Carleton College was second with 51 points in the 16-school meet.

“It was hot and humid out on the course,” said Warmington, the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year. “I thought we ran a strong race for our first time out and it’s a nice way to open the season.”

Bulldog All-American Samantha Rivard took individual honors by finishing in a time of 21:35.6  and shattering the previous meet record in the process (that was held by former UMD standout Morgan Place – 21:48  in 2009). Fellow sophomore Breanna Colbenson took second overall (21:51.9) and was followed by freshman Emi Trost (5th; 22:23.7), senior Alexandra Rudin (23:14.9) and rookie Amber Seidenkranz (16th; 23:25.6). Freshman McKenzie Holt (26th; 23:48.1) and sophomore Brittany Platt (29th; 24:01.4) rounded out the top seven UMD finishers.

UMD will be in Falcon Heights, Minn., next Saturday for the ultra-competitive Roy Griak Invitational on the University of Minnesota campus. UMD took second at that event one year ago.
